My Favorite Plants (AKA Plants I Can Keep Alive)

There’s something about adding plants into your home space that makes it feel fresher and more alive. There are also the health benefit to certain plant varieties in that they remove benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, and ammonia from our surroundings – chemicals that have been linked to adverse health effects like headaches, dizziness, eye irritation, and others (source). in your home for certain plants. Plants can add a touch of warmth to a home in a way that no other decor item can. But keeping plants alive can feel daunting at first. While I’m no plan expert, I have been able to keep some plants alive and specifically choose plants that are known to be low maintenance in their upkeep. If you want some inspiration on plants to also try to keep alive, read on.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

I love Snake Plants because they can add some visual interests to your home because of the distinct looking leaves and can survive in low light and benefits from a little neglect so you don’t over-water it. They also remove toxins in the air such as formaldehyde and benzene according to NASA.

Pothos (Epipremnum areum)

Pothos require a little more attention than a Snake Plant in my experience, but are still pretty easy to take care of as long as you remember to water them but don’t over-water them. They can tolerate low light so are good for those spots in your home that don’t have direct sunlight.

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas)

Another plant variety that I keep in indirect light and water occasionally when it gets dry (about once a week). These are great plants for non-animal owners like myself. I would not recommend this plant if you have pets because it is toxic.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

I love Peace Lily’s because as long as they are watered properly, they really thrive under low maintenance. They tend to start drooping when they are thirsty so it’s pretty easy to keep them adequately watered.

Succulents (Various varieties)

Succulents are particularly great if you have direct sunlight and are not great at remembering to water them. They thrive in strong light and allowances for them to completely dry out between watering.

Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonemas)

Chinese Evergreen is a newer plant that I purchased in a whim in the grocery store but they do really well under low light and infrequent watering. So a little neglect won’t impact them too much as long as bright sunlight doesn’t scorch their leaves.

Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)

My rubber plant is my higher maintenance plant that does require more sunlight than some of my others. I also find they like the dust wiped off of their leaves regularly.
